UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science
Spotlight on Lydie Malaika
11 February marks the United Nation’s International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This year, we spoke with Lydie Malaika, a metallurgical engineer at Kamoto Copper Company in the DRC. Lydie grew up in a family with five sisters and was deeply inspired by her father, who was a trained engineer in the field. Her determination and passion have guided her when raising her three daughters, who learn from her entrepreneurial nature and self-starting attitude.

Through hard work and focus, Lydie worked her way up to becoming the Electrowinning Manager at the mine – the first female in the region to gain this title. A trailblazer in her field, Lydie hopes to continue to inspire other women and girls in the DRC, who look to enter technical fields in the future.
